@dametalmessiah: D Double E in conversation with DaMetalMessiah for Living Proof Magazine For Living Proof’s London Issue, I sat down with the legendary D Double E in Forest Gate to explore his journey through grime and beyond. I’ve always seen him as the “ultimate London artist”, someone who’s moved through jungle, built his name in grime, shut down raves and pirate radio sets, and touched almost every corner of sound system culture along the way. Yet despite that, he’s often reduced to simply being labelled a “grime MC”, something that feels far too narrow for what he represents. Fresh from performing with Fred again.. at Alexandra Palace, he reflected on why performing songs means more to him than chasing reloads, the importance of building a catalogue of music, and why artists like himself, Skepta and Kano have long outgrown being defined by a single genre. We also spoke about growing up in Forest Gate, the importance of Jungle Hits Vol. 1, his time in crews such as Nasty Crew and Newham Generals, the evolution of UK music culture, and why he sees grime less as a sound and more as an attitude.
