It also didn't always work. It was just the silicon lottery. Did you get a chip that had no reason to be down graded, or did you get one that couldn't handle the speed.

I "upgraded" our old Phenom II from a dual to a quad core back it the day. It was still a shit CPU, but slightly less so.

not just clock speed, but core count too. there used to be 2, 3 and 4 core cpus almost identical from factory.

the Q6600 didn't even need this mod. you can OC it in the bios to reach 3.7GHz or above. I still have one and it's running although to never pushed it past 3.4 cause I don't want to risk it.

They used to sell stickers that would swap pins on Xeon processors to use them in desktop machines. I forget the socket but it was identical to the core2duo

Q6600 would overclock to 3.2ghz without having to mod the cpu, just learn how to OC in bios.

we need it back to ryzen CPUs. I wounder if my ryzen 9600x is faster CPU with downgraded CPU or its as a 9600x becuze it could not handle clocks of 9700x 😂
