Does being a CNA, MA, PCT matter in nursing school… no. Does it help you acclimate and know what you are getting into afterward in the job market and in the field, absolutely.

You absolutely don’t have to be a CNA/PCT but MANNN does it help?! 1000% it’s not a requirement but the connections and experience you get is so worth it to me

My nursing program requires you get your CNA license before the start of the program as one of the prerequisites

No shade at all, congratulations on passing!! But having never worked as a cna yourself and claiming that it “only helps a little bit during clinicals” is super misleading. Cna experience is invaluable. Anything to get your foot in door before graduation is worth the time!! Hiring staff in competitive/high paying areas will almost always take an rn with cna experience before one with no prior direct patient care hours

Being a CNA really helps with how the reality is in healthcare. A lot of people are really surprised and struggle a little when they first begin in healthcare because it isn’t anything like the books and stuff

I wasn’t ever a CNA but the people who were in my cohort definitely had a way easier time in clinical. The patient interaction is definitely more intimidating without that experience but it’s doable!

Certain states require you to have your CNA just to apply to the nursing program. Arizona is one of them

My school doesn’t require CNA but they gave extra points towards your admission rubric if you have a certain amount of experience… you don’t have to be a CNA but the ones I known who worked as a CNA first have made the best nurses…. You can tell most of the time who has and who hasn’t been a CNA….

Being a CNA gets you familiar and more confident when it comes to being more comfortable with patient care. Also nurses who were CNA’s before being a nurse tend to want to help out more because they know the feeling of being in their shoes.

As a CNA who works in a hospital, we get nursing students who come for clinicals and time to time ill have some who did not work as a CNA before getting into the program and will be very inexperienced during clinicals and ask me how to transfer a patient when the patient is min assist with a walker 🫠. I recommend at least getting some experience as a CNA because it honestly makes for a better nurse. You definitely do not have to but it helps have that experience and make it easier when it comes to interacting with patients during clinicals.

In CA it’s a point system to get in and it’s pretty impossible unless you get the CNA points cause too many people have straight A’s and did well on admissions exams.

After a few rounds of clinicals you will absolutely not have the same amount of knowledge and experience as someone who’s been working as a PCT/CNA prior to nursing school. I’ve been a CNA for 5 years and I’m in nursing school and currently work as a PCT and I work with student nurses and a lot of them do not how to do basic things like how to roll and lift ppl. I understand your point but someone who’s never done healthcare and has went through a few semesters of nursing classes it’s not gonna have as much patient care knowledge as I do after being in the field for 5 years😭
