Counter thought- she was drawn to Charlie BECAUSE of his natural shield and because he wasn’t like everyone else (just like Edward with reading Bella’s minds.) But, often, the thing that make you love someone makes you hate them too. When she couldn’t get her way with him like she could everyone else, she left.

Agreed, Rasputin gets the compulsory portion from Renee, the using thoughts portion from Edward, and the power to break through anyone’s mental defenses from Bella. The combo of those three is important, sharing thoughts means little if the person you’re sharing them with cares not

I could see this playing out but I thought it was confirmed that Edward had a theory that Charlie’s bloodline mostly had some type of shield based ability as he couldn’t read Bella’s thought and Charlie’s were like static. It was harder for him to read Charlie but not impossible for Eddie but it took actual effort to read Eddie.

I also think Bella’s gift is so strong because she developed traits from both parents. She can shield herself, but also throw her shield out to protect others. Kinda similar to how Renee projects her thoughts so loudly.

Theory makes sense but I don’t think they had a defense from her at all. Bella indulged her and had to be the responsible one, maybe picking up on her mom’s influence since she didn’t want to do it. And Charlie didn’t seem to move on from her until he got with Seth’s mom.

I kind of wonder if Bella actually did get both of her parent’s abilities. She got Charlie’s shield with Renee’s strength. She got Renee’s compulsion with Charlie’s strength. Everyone Bella meets is drawn to her in some form or fashion. Whether they end up loving her or loathing her, they’re still drawn and end up doing what she wants. In MS, before Edward meets/smells her, he describes her as a plain, normal human and attributes everyone at the school being obsessed with her as her being a new student/shiny object that they’d forget about in a few weeks. But that doesn’t happen. He falls for her. So do a lot of the others. Even the ones who don’t particularly like her still hang around her.

I actually feel like she is an advance version of a shield....except she isn't projecting inwards, it's outwards....She projects her mind outwards in a way, to protect herself.
