@emberandivyliteracy: We love a good system until it becomes the problem. Labeling every vowel and consonant under a word adds MORE letters for a struggling reader to process. Instead, just put a dot under each vowel. Same result. Half the chaos. Simpler is almost always better for dyslexic learners. 🌱 #dyslexia #structuredliteracy #readingintervention #dyslexiamom #scienceofreading
As a Wilson teacher. thats how I do it! I do not llabel with letters. I learned to have them "spot and dot your vowels"

I use 95% for reading intervention. I use blue ink for consonant and red for vowels and that way we pattern the letters into syllables without adding additional letters. I’m hoping the strategy works!

I was taught and teach my students, every syllable has a vowel. So we find the vowels and then sound out the word to see if they're long or short sounds and go from there.

Sometimes I use different color dots for vowels and consonants. That seems to work for many students I’ve taught.

I was thinking this too. The labels can become too much. I like this

I do spot and dot vowels then count the letters between.

Yes, that's what I do too - have them put dots under the vowels.

I wholeheartedly agree but what about multi syllable words for my 4 th graders? Any thoughts, suggestions ?

This is how I do it. Sometimes I’ll have them highlight vowels rather than mark under them

I like that. The way I learned is so cognitively overloaded.

I do that and then bring the vowels down and the work with students to decide which letters go with which vowel. And even better, start with looking for morphemes (prefixes, suffixes, base) and then do syllables if needed. Makes so much more sense since English is morphophonemic and prioritizes keeping meaning over sounds.

I agree! I dot the vowels so they can see how many consonants are between the vowels to determine whether to try open or closed as the first syllable.

I’m a dyslexia therapist and the program we use teaches it as a vccv pattern with labeling them. I see the same students for around 3 years. The place they start and where they end is amazing. They can do it if taught the right way.
