@seniordogdoc: You have seen it. They get up and the back legs go sideways for a second. Nails scrambling on the tile. And you think it is just the floor. Slippery floors. Every dog slips sometimes. So you put down a mat. Or a rug. Or you help them up. And you move on. But a senior dog whose back legs are sliding is often a dog whose rear end strength and coordination has quietly started to change. The floor did not get more slippery. Their ability to grip it changed. That sliding is the body telling you something about what is happening in the back legs and hips. It usually shows up on the floor before it shows up anywhere else. The mat helps. But it does not answer the question the sliding is asking. If your senior dog has started struggling on smooth floors, mention it at your next vet visit. Not just as a floor problem. As a mobility question. Follow for the senior dog signals hiding in the moments that seem like a household fix.
Not much to do about it other than help them. We put out yoga towels. He’s 15!

My 10 year old pug is having this issue. We have made it easier for her to get around. And have had her using ramps to get on and off the furniture for a few years now. And we carry her up and down the stairs

@Viviana W. Vallejo R. ✨: My dog is struggling with that. For example, last week was great, he was really good, this week not that much, he is almost 14. What can I do to help him and how do I know if he is in pain? Thanks in advance ♥️

Our poor girl has been declining last 6 months. Poor thing has bad arthritis in her hind legs and has started losing muscle mass but still likes to run in the backyard.

Obviously you take your pets in for regular check ups and to address pain issues that could be causing them to slip. Also stay on top of their nails! They don’t wear down as quickly. But it’s totally normal to make modifications in your home for anyone older, human or animal.

I Shih Tzu turned 17 in March. She struggles on the linoleum. I’m going to try a mat.
