Some people hate their birthday and feel ashamed admitting it because everyone else seems excited to celebrate. But for many people with trauma, birthdays are not a reminder of joy. They are a reminder of abandonment, disappointment, loneliness, grief, survival, or another year spent trying to hold everything together. Sometimes birthdays highlight the gap between the life you hoped for and the life you are currently living. For people from “me” families, birthdays can feel especially painful because they learned early on that emotional care, celebration, and being deeply known were not guaranteed. Instead of feeling celebrated, they feel exposed, disappointed, or emotionally unsafe. A birthday can bring up memories of who forgot, who hurt you, who made the day about themselves, or how invisible you felt growing up. Some people avoid celebrating altogether because they do not want to feel let down again. Others feel guilty because they think they should be grateful or happy. But dread around birthdays is often not about being ungrateful. It is about what the day represents emotionally. Sometimes the hardest part is realizing another year has passed while still carrying pain you thought you would have healed from by now.
