I think schools in particular are terrible at catching ND in general. I mean, they missed me too. Too often, we are seen as lazy drug seekers. But finding out people, as terrible as social media can be, has been a real game changer. my diagnoses is a direct result of ND creators on TikTok getting me off my ass. I'm thankful for that

I grew up in the ‘70s in the “gifted” program and there were a ton of (what I see in retrospect were autistic) kids of color there with me. But it was California, so there’s that.

that is unfair you should had the equal right to get support. I really stuggle at school too. and stuggked too I was dump.i. a modert learning dufficults. I have allways veen slow. I am 55 ywars old.... I had consider looking in to it the getting a dignoses but the cost doing private😳

One of the main themes I keep seeing about both Autism and ADHD that I keep seeing is that we (as a society) need to change our perception of what these condition look like. As I'm exploring this world, I'm still struggling with feeling like "That can't be me. My experience isn't like those kids with autism that everyone knows. I'm 53 and have never needed support".

I'm glad you got the diagnosis too. It is really unfortunate, your experiences with school,family and stigmas but I'm proud of you for overcoming, and now taking the time to examine and revisit while trying to understand yourself and your place in this crazy world. Youre doing a great service for many people, being here, sharing your testimony,your thoughts and some of your deepest hurts and sorrows. I'm here to watch you win, I have no doubt you will. You already did in so many ways. Choosing respect and kindness when you weren't always shown the same. Seems easier to join em, but I'm happy you beat em! 💪 🔥 👏

The way various points of identity shape one’s world and thus shape an autistic person’s presentation, is something I continue to find very interesting. I think it’s a very important aspect for moving toward more change and resources for autistic people who present their ASD and/or ADHD in ways that don’t “align” with what was seen as the “only way” one can be autistic. I think about this not just in the neurodivergent experience but obviously in all aspects of life. I really feel hopeful as well.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Honesty this is the first time I have heard this side of the story. I do know growing up these things were not talked about, ever. Especially not how, certain kids had more access to resources. As an adult I see, as I child I was clueless. I had many emotional and mental set backs growing up, none were addressed. I suffered in silence and was also deemed lazy, when in fact I was depressed. But the silver lining for the kids now, we know better so we do better. I really do appreciate your insight, it helps me to see things through a different lense

I thought ONLY boys, girls (me) could communicate well, behave, and social skills (even tho I was just copying everyone around me), always told I was "too much", "calm down" ,etc. i hear ya, my heart breaks for all of us that we're missed

I got held back in grade one and was told it was because I was ‘immature’. They knew something was wrong but didn’t even try to figure out what was going on and by grade three I was starting to mask my most obvious ‘flaws’.

you know what's weird is i grew up dirt poor white male and my parents threw every extra penny at giving me and my sister a private christian education and I learned to be very apathetic and quiet and holding in everything and I could never understand why I had so much severe social anxiety growing up in highschool and church... whats weird though is that if i went to public schooli definitely think they would have caught it. I just learned how to make sure I never connect with anyone. that being said, I now live in a purely Hispanic part of texas with my wife and son and I cant even remember the last time I talked to a white person and its not on purpose but gosh it just feels so weird to me now when I do, my son is biracial

I'm not black and I was labeled dumb and behavior issues. Actually I was labeled hes smart but doesnt apply himself. I went over looked for 46 years. Late diagnosed level 2 autism with PDA profile and ADHD

As a wt female, I mentioned autism to my mom a handful of months back and she’s convinced, *if this is real* it must be adult onset. She’s a (retired) elementary school teacher and she would have noticed. I was just: quiet, shy, intelligent, focused, etc… k.
