@mor10web: Microsoft and NVIDIA are banking on local AI models being the Next Big Thing. And I think they're right on the money here, because of privacy and token cost. With protests against AI datacentres happening across the globe, AI token costs soaring into the millions for even small companies, and data privacy becoming front-of-mind for companies and individuals, the idea of cutting the cloud cord and running language models locally is becoming more and more appealing. The main blocker for this shift-to-local AI is hardware cost and availability. Local language models require dedicated memory and processing. Even the most overbuilt laptops on the market can barely run the larger models that start rivalling those from OpenAI and Anthropic, and dedicated AI inference machines start at over $4000 US. That's a huge cost, but considering many developers are spending several thousand per month on tokens, even that eye watering price tag starts making sense. It's with all of this as backdrop that new hardware news hit the mainstream this week: Between Nvidia's new RTX Spark (a tiny chip with enough power to run huge LLMs locally on small laptops) and Microsoft's new Surface computers including the Surface Laptop Ultra and the desktop AI powerhouse Surface RTX Dev Box, it is clear the two tech behemoths are reading the room and meeting a growing demand. Once these machines hit the market, I expect the rush for Mac Minis and Studios will dry up quickly, and there's a good chance people who up until now have sworn allegiance to Apple will see a financial and performance gain in shifting from Mac to PC! The good news is you don't have to wait, or to buy a new computer, to run local models. Even my $50 Rasberry Pi can run some smaller models (slowly, and with hilariously bizarre results), and the free open AI models are getting faster and better every day. I think we're headed towards a future where the big AI companies have to make some pretty compelling arguments for people to go out and pay through the nose for tokens when they can run models at home for free. We shall see! Are you using local models? What are your experiences? Comments are open, and I'm curious to hear your experiences. Drop a line, create a video of your own, and let's figure out this AI stuff together! -- Links: Nvidia RTX Spark: https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-microsoft-windows-pcs-agents-rtx-spark Microsoft Surface RTX Dev Box: https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-microsoft-windows-pcs-agents-rtx-spark Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra: https://www.theverge.com/tech/941600/microsoft-surface-laptop-ultra-dev-box-hands-on LM Studio: https://lmstudio.ai/ Ollama: https://ollama.com/ Hugging Face: https://huggingface.co/ #mortenexplains @surface @vscode #rtx #ollama #lmstudio

Local LLM’s will probably never be better than a massive model in a big server. But it will eventually reach a point that that doesn’t matter anymore, local LLM’s should get good enough pretty fast with the advances made and will most likely be the more cost effective long term solution for heavy users. But free/low cost users will still use/pay a small fee for eventual/rare usage.

Would you look at that. Tokens get expensive just as nvidia and MS announce this. It’s almost as if it is all planned.

A new Mac Studio might be a big seller. I have the first model, so I don’t think it’s capable enough, but new ones might do the job.

THANK GOD ....I'm so happy this is the new trend. Because if this becomes the new thing, companies will pour all that cash into developing better small local models and perhaps sell it to us for a one time fee, but that's a more suitable proposition for the future of AI than what's going on now. We've done this before..... first the tech appears, then we shrink it to impossible sizes

DeepSeek-V4-Flash sounds like it will be huge for local LLM capabilities.

Still one needs expensive computers so it is not smthng for the mom&pop businesses secondary (old) PCs 'sitting on the cupboard'

there are some decent computers out there with the amd strix halo chips, which have the same amount of unified ram and nearly the same amount of bandwidth.
these new nvidia chips have the advantage of being nvidia, which is what everyone designs their AI software for.
but the amd strix halo has the advantage of being x86 so it can run your other services too, in addition to your ai.

A few questions, can these models source the web for solutions for me? I want to have a local model to help me with coding in my game development and can I have it on separate hardware on my Lan?

Frontier models will be used for planning, while local models will be used for implementation and following detailed guidance from frontier.

external compute is on the same curve as local models, they improve as fast as each other. the local models aren't getting closer, there no shrinking gap. if there was then why would anthropic ipo if their was any risk of claude being cooked by local models in in a year or two

Local models will solve so many of the issues with AI. Problem are the computers. None of my fairly new computers can for example run the local Adobe model even though I spec’ed them generously for Photoshop.

it is the tech industry 's new attempt to sell consumer PCs and Laptops! nobody can run such local models efficiently.

No, local models are not even close to the slowest premier models. even their older versions of the past year.
but if you are just asking general questions or not too complex task or coding then yes.. local LLMs can do that.

are local models just a few months behind or are they 6 months or more behind. I definitely don't want to go back to the shit we had 12 months ago. unless it's the harness that has made all the difference

We are upgrading Ruby Hospital’s chatbot into a self-hosted local AI assistant. It will use approved CMS content as its knowledge base and generate answers through a local model running on our own infrastructure, reducing dependency on external token-based AI APIs.

At the moment I care about results. Speed is the last thing on my mind. Should a local model deliver the same results say Claude + Unreal Engine 6, we good.
