@celia.gercovich: If I were ordering food, I would obviously let the cafe/restaurant know, but for a takeaway or even sit-in coffee, I haven't mentioned having coeliac disease. Would love to know your experiences with this and if it's something you mention #coeliacdisease #celiacdisease #glutenfree
I work in a cafe and we have two wands on our coffee machine for steaming the milks - moo milk one end and the alternative milks like oat milk at the other end to avoid the cross contamination 🤭😊 t

At the temperature that steam wand heats up to you are essentially killing the bacteria on the wand so why would it be an issue

I’m a barista. Have been for 13 years. No one has ever mentioned to me that they are coeliac when making a hot coffee. We always wipe our steam wand and purge. Our cloth (for wiping wand) is rinsed regularly too.

I mention it every time hot or cold, but I wasn’t even thinking about oat milk. I was thinking about the little treats they stick on the cup lid and the paper straws.

Oat milk doesn’t contain gluten. However, oats are a high risk of cross contamination from farming processes, and so Australian labeling laws require a product containing oats to be labeled as containing gluten. You might find in other countries the same oat milk labeled as gluten free due to different regulations.

The amount of oats in oat milk plus the wand being wiped and steamed out and jugs rinsed makes me feel like it’s absolutely not worth it

Oat milk doesn’t have gluten but because of Australian labelling laws and the fact that a lot of coeliacs also react to the proteins in oat milk they have to label it as containing gluten

I was never concerned until oat milk became a thing, now I choose cafes that don’t offer oat milk, if they do I get an iced drink.

Newbie coeliac question - what do I say when ordering? Just mention that I have coeliac & ask the staff to be mindful about cross contact with glutenous meals?

my sister in law does. she lives in a small town and some many cafes add a little cookie on the side or on top of the take away cup.

1. No I don’t but also 2. Coeliac Australia is encouraging Coeliacs to discuss adding oats to their diet with their doctors. It’s very possible that you’re fine with oats which could be why you’ve never reacted to oat milk

No, I will refuse to do this. I need one thing where I don’t have to explain it constantly.

Barista here 🙋♀️had a few people mention it to me, and i usually make sure to clean everything before making their hot coffee. I also make sure to mention we can't garantee 100% that there will be no cross contamination as we use the same steam wand. Cafes in Australia for the most part have high standards for cleanliness so i wouldnt worry if the cafe itself looks clean
