There's nothing wrong with playing Survival with Keep Inventory turned on. Minecraft is a sandbox game, which means players are given the freedom to play however they enjoy the most. Some people like the challenge of losing their items on death, while others prefer focusing on building, exploring, or having fun without worrying about losing hours of progress. The way someone chooses to play doesn't affect anyone else's world, and there isn't a single "correct" way to enjoy Minecraft. If they're having fun and playing within the game's options, then they're playing Minecraft exactly as intended.
