One of the things being in a relationship with a narcissist teaches you is that being caught resting, relaxing, sitting down, watching TV, or doing anything for yourself often comes with: – Criticism. – Accusations of laziness. – Guilt trips. – Hostility. – Passive aggression. Things like that. Why? Well, generally speaking, narcissistic partners don't see you as a person. They see you as an object they get to use. So they don't really care about who you are. All they care about is what you can do for them. It's a lot like the relationship you have with your phone. You don't care about your phone's identity, hopes, or dreams. You only care about what it can do for you (calling, texting, entertaining you, etc.) So when you're in a relationship with someone who sees you like this, your nervous system learns one simple rule: When they get home, look productive. It's not necessarily a conscious decision you're making in the moment. It's more like an instinct, because being productive feels safer than being caught enjoying yourself.
