I didn’t realize how much I would sacrifice in my life and how much it would take out of me.

Hot take as a doctor, the job is way easier than I imagined as a premed!

If your goal was to be rewarded for working hard you should’ve gone into investment banking… I became a doctor because I wanted a profession where I could help people in a unique way…

I wasn’t premed. Did basic research in molecular biology lab for 7 years after undergrad. Loved it. Went into medicine for the wrong reason…. Because I could. Still not sure why I did it. Passed on a great job at Amgen bc I got into med school. I could probs be a millionaire rn instead of a burnt out ER doc!

This is so true, I wish I knew more about Medicine before studying it, I’m unsure if I would’ve studied Medicine had I known more about it 🥲

Welp I figure out pretty quickly that I did not enjoy labs so I switched to merchandising for a career in buying. Great choice for me and patients everywhere 😂

It’s not a profession, it’s a permanent lifestyle change that you have very little control over

Preach, it sometimes feels like ‘you gotta know what youre committing to’ mentality is there largely to guilt you out any of the feeling of wanting to leave. Like “oh well you picked this so what did you expect?”

it is so inspiring to see people like you; with the intelligence and drive you could have done anything— and you chose the path that allows you to save, or at least improve, another human’s life.

Actually knowing thyself is one of the most difficult things but it is said reflection into childhood gets us to the closest core answer.

I honestly think the people who are truly happy in medicine are those like you who don't do much else besides work. Like they LIVE the work. I don't think there's a way to screen for that.

Future Dr. Jeweler :
So true!! They can try and prepare all they can but in the end, premeds just need to be ready for any type of experience, understand that it will be harder than they think, and expect to be changed as a human by the process. Best thing I’ve ever done, but not without sacrifice

You don't realize how much it takes out of you to hear the screams of family when young people pass or comforting people scared of death. All while dealing with a broken and overloaded system on minimal sleep. Just lost your dog, your grandma, your parent...
