Yeah I thought it was weird that we also NEVER saw her other than the photo. I was hoping we’d get one scene where maybe he tried to apologize to her or talk to her. I thought maybe they just cut stuff out to trim down the movie, but this makes sense. It also explains why he’s so obsessed with the backrooms too, I thought it was kind of weird how obsessed he was, they never really explained that.

Someone mentioned that Clark is getting therapy in the 90’s (stigmas went crazy back then) and it’s likely court ordered, especially with how happy he was to be told he didn’t have to change.

Plus the way he sets the scene, dinner was ready and when captain clark comes in (the state similar as drunk clark)she run in complete terror.

She’s very much alive. It is necessary for Clark’s character development that his wife is still alive. That’s the whole point of the scene where he goes back to his old house. He gets there wanting to confront her, sees that the lights are out and he’s once again shown up late from work (which was a part of the fight that landed him out of the house) and then he makes the conscious decision not to get out of the car. It’s the part that’s supposed to make you think he’s growing as a person before the third-act rug-pull.

while this is a really cool theory and I like the connections that you made, I think it really defeats the point of clark being morally grey and instead makes him out to be a complete villian tbh. but the movie is up to interpretation so I'm not saying it's wrong or anything

kane explained that clark feels this world is almost better off without him, the purpose of the “quiet” house is to demonstrate how futile his affect is even at a reattempt, hence his therapist deeming she can’t help him
