Federal officials are asking the State of California not to release a truck driver from custody. This comes after a deadly wreck involving his semi truck on Highway 99 in California. Authorities say the crash happened Tuesday afternoon near the Harney Lane off-ramp in Lodi when a Freightliner semi slammed into slowed traffic on northbound Highway 99. Investigators say the impact triggered a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles, leaving two young men, ages 16 and 20, dead and several others injured. According to prosecutors, the semi truck driver, identified as 24-year-old Manvir Singh, allegedly attempted to flee the scene after the crash. Investigators claim Singh first tried helping one victim before leaving the area and reportedly attempting to call for an Uber ride. He was later detained by California Highway Patrol officers nearby. Singh is now facing multiple felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, hit-and-run causing death or injury, and resisting police. Prosecutors argued in court that there appeared to be no skid marks at the scene, suggesting the truck may not have braked before impact. The case became even more controversial after the Department of Homeland Security stated Singh allegedly entered the United States illegally through Arizona in 2023. DHS officials are now asking California authorities not to release him and reportedly want him transferred into federal custody if released from local jail. DHS has claimed that they are putting a detainer on Singh so that if she could be released, he will be released into I.C.E.custody. Singh’s defense attorney pushed back on claims of gross negligence, calling the incident a tragic accident rather than criminal recklessness. It also has been released that Singh had only been at this trucking company for a week before this wreck. They had not released if this was his first trucking job or not. A judge has since increased Singh’s bail to $400,000 and ordered that if released, he must surrender his passport and wear a GPS monitor. #TruckDriver #TruckingNews #Highway99 #CaliforniaCrash #truckingtruecrimepodcast
