To clarify since no one is researching, the particles aren’t traveling faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. They are traveling faster than the light in the water. For instance, you can’t run faster than sprinter Usain Bolt but you can run faster than him if he’s running through mud.

Cherenkov effect occurs when an electron travels faster than light in a specific medium, in this case water. For those that are confused, light in the vacuum of space is indeed the fastest measurable speed known . BUT In dense mediums such as H20, charged particles such as electrons & subatomic particles and atomic ions, takes the win.

The particles travel faster in water than light can travel in water, not faster than light travels in a vacuum. It creates essentially a ’sonic boom’ with light instead of sound.

there's a caveat, it should've specified "faster than light IN WATER" Light is slower in different mediums than it is in a vacuum. We can move faster than light in water.

Ok, for those wondering, when light travels through water, it bounces around the water molecules, taking longer than it would in a vacuum, so, yes, nothing travels faster than the speed of light but the light takes longer to reach you than the radiation because it's taking a longer path.

What if…speed of light is the fastest speed of travel we as a society have ever learned about? What if there is a means of travel that is faster than the speed of light that has yet to be discovered? (Whether thru wormhole travel or otherwise)
