At 21, I wanted to be a millionaire. I was blessed to hit that at 25. At 29 now, I run two companies that do millions a year in revenue and millions in profit. But the coolest part is literally all of my business partners are my closest friends. Here are the 3 things I learned along this journey: 1. People say you shouldn’t do business with friends and family. Well, my brother is one of my business partners. My two best friends from growing up are also business partners. And my 4th partner is one of my closest friends from adult life. So I am literally the polar opposite of that quote. Here’s my contention with this issue: The argument for saying you shouldn’t do business with your friends and family is that it makes your personal relationship harder. So in that instance, you’re going to spend 40-80hrs every week for decades with people you don’t like as much to simply preserve a few hours a week of hangout time with your close friends? To me, that’s a pretty terrible trade. I would much prefer to have my entire life be built around spending as much time with the people I like and respect. Which means I would by definition have to do business with them, because I like to work and I work a lot. 2. Employees/team members. I am beyond blessed with the people on my team at my companies. I no longer put up with BS or bad attitudes. I want to surround myself with people who want to learn, who I can also learn from, and who are smarter than me in their respective categories. 3. Friends that are not in business. This goes for your partner as well. Shoshana, my soon to be wife, unconditionally supports me. She doesn’t pester me when I work all Saturday. She builds me up, brings me coffee, and tells me things like, “Thank you for building for our family.” The same goes for the friends I choose to keep in my life. They may not be on the same path, but they respect what I do and support me. That is one of the biggest cheat codes in life: Build with people you love, work with people you respect, and keep people around you who actually want to see you win.
