You are the awareness noticing your thoughts. Think about it. If you can observe a thought, how can you be the thought? The thought is an event happening inside your mind. You are the one watching it happen. That’s cognitive defusion. Instead of becoming the thought, you step back and notice it. And the moment you do that, the thought loses some of its power.
