Autonomous AI agents just spent $73 million in crypto and almost nobody connected the dots. A new Keyrock report co-authored by Coinbase, Tempo, and Virtuals shows AI agents settled 176 million on-chain transactions over the past 12 months. Average transaction size, 48 cents. 98.6% of it ran in USDC. Here is why Visa can't compete. A USDC transfer on Base costs about one-hundredth of a penny. The same payment through Visa costs roughly 30 cents plus 9 cents on Stripe's card rail. That leaves a merchant a tenth of a penny on a 30 cent payment. 76% of AI agent transactions are below Visa's 30 cent fee floor. The card networks are not getting partially disrupted. They are being structurally locked out of the entire micropayment economy. Four protocols are now racing to become the standard. Coinbase is building x402 with Cloudflare. Stripe and Tempo co-authored the Machine Payments Protocol. Google released AP2. Visa is trying to extend tokenized card credentials. Coinbase and Stripe each control 5 of the 6 layers of this stack. Circle controls 4. Gartner projects AI agents will intermediate 50 trillion dollars in purchases by 2028. McKinsey says retail and commerce alone hits 3 to 5 trillion by 2030. For context, Visa processes about 14 trillion annually. If Gartner is even directionally right, AI agents will match Visa's entire global throughput inside 24 months, running on USDC. Code is going to negotiate with code, settle in stablecoins, and never touch a bank. The companies that own these rails — Coinbase, Circle, Stripe — are positioned to own the next decade of finance. The people who understand the infrastructure early are the ones who get to position before everyone else. Follow for the next breakdown
