Lucas Museum of Narrative Art: School Gallery. I had the opportunity to explore the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art as a Founding Member. I admired multiple original paintings by some of my favorite African-American artists Ernie Barnes, Kadir Nelson and too many to mention, but one work of art captivated my attention and touched by heart by an Italian-American artist Leo Politi. As an educator myself, I was immediately drawn to the School gallery where my eyes transfixed upon a mixed media on board artwork of “A Girl Sketching the Watts Towers” from the Lucas Family personal collection. The artist Leo Politi labeled it “A young student at the Watts Tower Art School”. He was inspired to create this hauntingly beautiful artwork of a young student painting the iconic Watts Towers of her community adorned with roses in her background from personal experience in the Watts community in 1967 when he also painted a masterwork titled “Watts Towers at Night”. Politi was a friend and admirer of the Watts Towers’ creator, Italian Sabato Rodia. He drew Watts, a neighborhood in South Los Angeles, during the time of civil unrest in the mid 1960s. This artwork shows beauty and hope can be found almost anywhere. Leo Politi was born in California to Italian parents in 1908. When Politi was seven years old, his family returned to his mother’s hometown in Northern Italy. Politi always loved to draw and was constantly sketching on scraps of paper. In 1923, when Politi was fifteen years old, he won a scholarship to the National Art Institute at the Royal Palace of Monza where he studied for six years. Politi returned to the United States in 1930, married in 1934 and rented a home on Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles where he would write and illustrate award-winning children's books. In addition to his children’s books, Politi wrote and illustrated books for adults, sharing his love for historical Los Angeles. Politi passed away in 1996. He has been honored with the naming of Leo Politi Elementary School, located in Koreatown, Leo Politi Square, an intersection in Echo Park, and Montecillo De Leo Politi Park, a recreational area north of Dodger Stadium. The 300,000-square-foot Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is designed to appear as if it is floating above an 11-acre landscape as a cloud that defies gravity, with its sculptural form extending across gardens. 35 galleries showcase works spanning painting, sculptures, illustration, comics, photography, digital media, and cinematic artifacts. The museum brings together, art, storytelling, and architecture to create a cultural landmark for Los Angeles in Exposition Park across the street from the University of Southern California. #lucasmuseumofnarrativeart #leopoliti #wattstowers #lucasmuseum #lucasart
