i think its just because of how memories work, like in the show its hinted the more you remember the less you do, so this memory was playing inside her head so many times many details were altered

The other people in the flashback were clearly still because it's a flashback and it helps the atmosphere. It becomes unnerving, especially because memories are something important to the film's plot. The mother probably meant that "gates" to the backrooms were everywhere, not life forms or still life. People love to just start looking too much into stuff and end up making up things
