Many believers have been taught to look for a feeling or look for fruit, changed behavior, or some inward transformation as proof they were saved. But this creates endless doubt because our behavior is inconsistent. The teaching from the transcripts makes clear that the gospel itself is the power of God unto salvation, and believing it is what saves you.
If you can say today that you believe Jesus Christ died for your sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day - then you are saved. The Spirit bears witness with your spirit that this is true. You may not remember the exact moment that faith first took root, but that doesn’t change the reality that it is there.
A Simple Way to Think About It
Imagine a man who was adopted as an infant but doesn’t remember the adoption ceremony. Does that mean he’s not adopted? No - the legal document proves his adoption, not his memory of the event. In the same way, your faith in the gospel today is the evidence that you have been born of God.
The Spirit’s witness in you, causing you to hold the testimony of Christ as true, is the seal of your salvation.
Ephesians 1:13-14* tells us: ” In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession."
This resolves the immediate concern by shifting your focus from when you believed to what you believe. The gospel you hold as true today is the anchor of your assurance, not a distant memory you’re trying to verify.
This sits at the intersection of justification by faith alone and the sealing of the Spirit. If you hold the gospel as true - that Christ died for your sins and rose again - then you have the witness of the Spirit in you, and that witness is the evidence that you are God’s child. The timing of when that faith first awakened is secondary to the fact that it is present now.
