My Instagram account had 500,000 followers... and Meta banned it overnight. No warning. No real explanation. Just years of work suddenly became inaccessible. And this isn't just a problem I faced. Meta has increasingly relied on automated systems to detect and enforce policy violations at massive scale. There have also been documented cases of accounts being disabled for reasons people dispute, while Meta itself acknowledges that mistakes can happen with automated enforcement. The problem is that you are building your business on someone else's platform. And when something goes wrong, you don't control the appeals process. Even Meta's own Oversight Board has raised concerns about transparency and due process around account deactivations. So how do you protect yourself? 1. Build on multiple platforms. Don't let Instagram be your entire business. Post on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X, or wherever your audience exists. The more platforms you're established on, the harder it is for one suspension to completely erase your presence. 2. Build an email list and monetize early. Your followers on Instagram aren't truly your audience if you have no way to contact them outside Instagram. Build an email list as soon as you can. And start making money as soon as you can. Having cash gives you options if something goes wrong. You could invest in another page, launch somewhere else, hire help, or simply give yourself enough runway to rebuild. Your email list is different. You own the list and the ability to communicate with those people isn't dependent on Instagram's algorithm. 3. Have Meta insurance. If Instagram is an important part of your business, take account protection seriously. Things like Meta Verified and properly connecting your Instagram presence to your Facebook/Meta business infrastructure can give you additional support and recovery options when something goes wrong. None of this guarantees that you'll get your account back. But having more support and more legitimate connections around your business can put you in a much better position than having one Instagram account and nothing else. The biggest lesson from losing the biggest asset i had. #business #security #entrepreneurlife
