In Ashita no Joe, what might look like hypergamy is really just a sharp class divide playing out in the background. Yōko Shiraki is from the upper class, Joe Yabuki comes from poverty, and the gap between them is the point more than any romantic strategy. There’s no real “seeking upward status through a partner” here. Joe isn’t trying to move into Yōko’s world, and the story doesn’t treat their connection that way anyway. It’s more that they exist on completely different levels of society, and the contrast highlights how closed those worlds are. So instead of hypergamy driving anything, it’s really just class tension and Joe’s fight to define himself on his own terms.
