@capitalist.critique: POL POT AND THE KHMER ROUGE. When people talk about them, they act like they were madmen who came to power out of thin air. No, Cambodia was subject to French colonialism for nearly 100 years. This left the country in deep poverty due to resource extraction. It also left the country with a sharp divide between rich and poor. Then came American imperialism, which dropped over 500,000 tons of bombs on the country during Operation Menu and Operation Freedom Deal. This destabilized the country and radicalized people into joining Angkar. Their way of life was destroyed, and they were fighting to free themselves from the remnants of colonialism and the shackles of imperialism. Like any anti-colonial movement that fights against the West, there’s going to be propaganda against it. First, there’s the claim that everyone with glasses was killed, despite Pol Pot, Son Sen, Ieng Sary, and other members of Angkar wearing glasses. Second, there’s the claim that Pol Pot was a CIA agent, despite that being a conspiracy theory with no evidence. Third, there’s the claim that because Angkar held Cambodia’s seat at the UN, America therefore funded them. This doesn’t logically follow. Stalin and Mao also had seats at the UN. Stalin was also funded by America during World War II, yet that doesn’t make him any less of a communist. “Oh, but that was to defeat the Nazis!” If so, then funding alone doesn’t determine class character. Fourth, there’s the claim that industry was abolished, that Angkar wanted to return to the Stone Age, and that they were anarcho-primitivists. This is another lie. Industry is the organized production of goods and services using labor, machinery, and raw materials. Agriculture was industrialized in the countryside. Finally, there are the allegations of genocide. Pictures of skulls aren’t forensic evidence. They don’t show who, where, why, or how. How do we know that Pol Pot personally ordered genocide? The Ba Chúc Massacre doesn’t prove that Pol Pot personally ordered it any more than war crimes committed by Russian soldiers against Germans prove that Stalin ordered them, or that the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam proves American generals ordered it. Mass-starvation isn’t proof that Angkar’s policies didn’t work. French colonialism and American imperialism both played a role in the country’s destabilization and devastation. #marxism #socialism #communism #polpot #cambodia

Regardless of the veracity of the claims against Pol Pot (I also agree that they are largely myths), Pol Pot and co. were shitty communists, and were rightfully put down like the dogs they were by Vietnam. Attacking Vietnam and supporting Cambodia was one of China’s few mistakes.
