And then he opened his mouth. He stood at the stern of his ship and screamed back at the island. Told Polyphemus that it was him. Odysseus of Ithaca. Son of Laertes. The one who blinded him. Remember that name. His men begged him to stop. Grabbed at him. Told him he was going to get them all killed. He screamed it again. Louder. What Odysseus did not know was that Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon, god of every ocean between him and home. And now, with a name to curse, Polyphemus stretched his hands to the sky and prayed to his father. Grant that Odysseus never reaches home. Or if it is fated that he must, let him arrive late, alone, with no ships, having lost every single man he sailed with, and let him find nothing but trouble waiting for him when he gets there. I think Odysseus' ending was quite fair. Think about it for a moment. Polyphemus was the owner of the cave, the owner of the flock, and the owner of every piece of food and every drop of water inside that cave. From that perspective, Odysseus and his crew were essentially trespassers and thieves. They even intended to take some of Polyphemus' sheep with them. And because of the difference in race—indeed, in species—it is only natural that a Cyclops would deal with intruders very differently from how humans would. Not to mention that after blinding Polyphemus, Odysseus became so arrogant and full of himself that he shouted his own name back at him, forgetting that countless monsters in that world were the children of gods. At that point, he had become far too prideful, convinced of his own cleverness, and it was precisely that arrogance that provoked Poseidon's wrath. I love the romance between Odysseus and Penelope because it is genuinely beautiful, but beyond that, that's about all I like.
