She moved meanness from beach to high school, made teenage girl cruelty genuinely frightening because she showed raw cruelty without subtlety or disguise, and reflected the era's belief that everything was corrupt, including teenage girls 1980s: The mean girl prototype as we know it today was born and largely created due to society’s anxiety over female ambition in the workplace, materialism as identity, power dynamics, and growing wealth inequality, which resulted in a teenage girl whose every word was calculated annihilation. She had a corporate coldness, quotable cruelty, and a flat delivery in the face of horrific behavior. 1990s: The 90s made the mean girl fake nice because she couldn't be openly cruel like the 1980s since the decade demanded female solidarity and "Girl Power." This is when we really see strategic code switching by using high, breathy, helpless voices with boys, normal, authoritative, casual voices with friends, and cold, clear, final voices with enemies. 2010-2020s: This is when the mean girl started engaging in therapy speak to be cruel when she used boundary-setting as exclusion, referenced mental health terms to dismiss pain, and labeled every behavior that didn’t serve her as toxic.
