@subwaytakes: Episode 719: The modern artist is dead, and we're all just living in hell!! (📍London) @su, i think #subwaytakes #interview #modernart #artists #london
my aunt who never talks about books randomly sent me a link to book The Secret Side of Our Existence by Victor Hale and just said “read this.” no explanation nothing. i read it in two days and now i understand why she didn’t even try to explain it over text. some parts just make you stop and go wait. why does this actually make sense you wait read this book. it will change your life

A ton of classic artists did loads of different arts though, so this is a terrible take

The reason now is “corporations” are the “patrons” and they only pay for “content” to use for “advertisements” so if you can’t be used as a commercial (including product placement and sync licensing) you won’t be supported by a philanthropic individual unless your fine art can be leveraged as a financial instrument for tax code purposes.

I'm an artist and this year decided I was going to stop publishing my paitings, and doing the timelapses, because ART IS NOT CONTENT. And yes, I've accepted I'm never going to live from my paintings or being famous, and that's ok. I won't disrespect the only thing that makes my life make sense by degrading it to be feed in a platform. I can get money other ways and keep my art for me and whoever visists my shows and my studio 🙂

Even ol Andy warhol was a commercial illustrator before he had all the freedom to do anything. He also cared for his mother. It’s been a process to get somewhere as an artist since the beginning.

Also lack of art communities doesn’t help. The early 2000’s rock renaissance was largely people just living next to each other in New York and Virginia Beach also had a lot of hip hop artists living nearby. Missy Elliot Pharrell Timbaland all came from Virginia Beach

Artists also used to work on the behalf of people, organizations, and religious institutions, that had money. And the artists were willing to do work that promoted those in institutions.

Artists have always had to do more than the art to make a living. Marketing, brand deals, teaching has always been a part of it.
