When I’m underwater… weightless, dancing, playing, doing whatever, I am my inner child. The ocean brings out so much curiosity, wonder and freedom for me. Simply being that the ocean is a place of magic. I can float, I can sink and I can fly. Indescribable in feeling, though in description bear with me as I will still try. When I freedive, my restraint is mere oxygen. I read an article today on @wiredme by @rhettallain that described being in water as: “Whats so great about getting in a swimming pool? The answer is that it can make you feel like a superhero. Even in the shallow end, you can easily lift another person—even someone larger than you. You become the hero of the pool area (until you get out of the water). Even just floating in the pool, you feel like you are defying gravity.” Think about it, where else can we feel so weightless? Have such land defying ‘power’? Simple joy can be found in positive buoyancy, like expressed above you can feel as if you’re floating in space.. because you are floating, just in a body of water. Swim under (exhale for quicker effect) and you could hit neutral buoyancy where you aren’t even floating or sinking at all- just hovering.. an equilibrium of gravity and buoyancy. Go deeper and you’ll hit a depth where youll be negatively buoyant… even if you took a full breath.. (cue boyles law) & if streamlined in your freefall position enough, you’ll be descending (sinking) at speeds of a metre per second. Kick back up and as your lungs expand once more you’ll be floating (call it flying for added wonder) up to the surface again. These aren’t exactly correlated to water in of itself but an experience we can enjoy thanks to being in water at all. & what fun we can have toying with these realities. In all it’s complexity how can we not think swimming and being in water is insane? A sustenance of our existence and a means of playful fun, too.. while all at the same time being a home for some species and an entire world of its own residing on our very same planet. How cool. #underwater #ocean #diver #diving #freedive #freediving #freediver #underwatermodel
