One thing that has become increasingly clear since Michael turned 5-years-old is that public interactions in shared play spaces are becoming more challenging. (I suppose it doesn’t help he’s the size of a 6-7 year old boy) This complicates our efforts in exploration and positive exposures, both of which are crucial for his development. As he navigates social dynamics with other children and the adults supervising them, the unpredictability of people can be overwhelming for both of us. It puts us in a state of hyper-vigilance: will the world show us kindness today? Michael is absorbing so much, and while he can’t yet articulate his thoughts and feelings, I can sense his awareness of every moment when I need to step in and defend him. It breaks my heart to see him, in his own limited way, question which side of the train-table he should “stay”. Many of the negative interactions we encounter come from parents and grandparents who raise their children with the notion that a child like my son is “sick” and not to be “touched”. Unfortunately, the issue extends beyond just parents and grandparents—young adults who lack emotional maturity, education, and social skills also contribute to the challenges we encounter. They are next generation of parents-to-be! This reality emphasizes the critical importance of our efforts to share Michael’s experiences and raise awareness about why it’s essential to recognize and understand children like him. 📌Continued in Pinned Comment at the end of the video 🎥 👑 Catch all the Exclusive Mini-Vlogs on the Subscribers’ Page. 📔eBook on Joint Attention & collection of activities, link in BIO 🔗 📔[NEW] eBook on a collection of activities for Speech Exercises, link in BIO 🔗 #sad #heartbreak #parenting #autism #nonverbal #nonspeaking #ASL #signlanguage #representationmatters #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #inspiration #motivation #autismawareness
