@sincerelyjennifergrace: The next time you visit a new city, try exploring it like an anthropologist. Most tourists focus on the landmarks but anthropologists focus on people… because they are primarily focused on understanding how a society works, what people value, and how culture shows up in everyday life. #travel #lifelonglearning #anthropology #arthistory #intellectual
Omg am I an anthropologist???? THIS IS HOW I TRAVEL. This is how I learn about other places. 😭😭😭

That’s exactly how I like to travel! I call it “live like a local”. Of course you can’t fully experience a city as a local but we try. For example we rent apartments vs hotel, get groceries, try local restaurants for food, skip most tourist traps and prefer local-ish places. I read about cultural preferences and language. And the most fun is people watching: noticing how they great each other, how they move, walk, how they interact with family vs strangers etc. it’s fascinating. I call it “keys”. When you get a cultural key, you unlock a whole different way to experiencing life!

Love this. And if I may add: if more people travelled like this I believe mass tourism would be less of an issue, because suddenly every new place has potential to be interesting and not just the same few places you see online or hear people talk about

that why I don't travel, I sojourn. move to another country, learn the language, take part in local society, make good friends and coworkers. then 4-5 years later move somewhere completely different and do it again 💜

This is bad idea. this severely limits experiences. Better try to travel as Geographer: countless layers on every breath you take. You’re welcome 😘

Another tip is watching a movie / reading a book by someone from this country beforehand, helps to get a better sense of their way of thinking

I think this loops into asking bartenders and servers where they would go if they were gonna go out for the day. It’s 1) a great way to get amazing recommendations outside of the tourist traps and 2) such interesting data and observations!!

Or here me out: it is okay to be a touristy and enjoy touristy activities. They are popular for a reason. You can people watch back at home

My favorite way of traveling! i love experiencing a new place in the way a people live there: joining and observing the community instead of as a consumer.
