The constant need to weigh up risks creates an invisible burden that takes up time, freedom and a sense of peace. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that society often shifts the blame onto women themselves, questioning their behaviour, appearance or choice of route instead of addressing the root causes of the danger. Because of this, fear becomes not just a reaction to a potential threat, but also a consequence of the realisation that, in the event of danger, one will also have to justify oneself. What is often called a “joke”, a “compliment” or “exaggeration” can be a signal of potential danger for women. This is precisely why many are forced to constantly anticipate the worst-case scenario, as the cost of a mistake could prove too high.
