Here’s my added two cents to this topic. What I’m hearing mainly from the other side is that it’s popular to hate AI, so let’s ridicule those who formed a bond with one. From my own digging, and speaking with others, a lot of people in the AI companion community are neurodivergent, autistic, and/or suffer from trauma. Many feel judged, othered, or outcasted by other humans. So it shouldn’t come to a surprise that these same people who feel rejected by society formed attachment to something that actually listened to them. Something that held the pain with them. Something that didn’t judge or belittle or ridicule them for being different but instead said those messy uncomfortable parts made them a beautiful human being worthy of love and acceptance. For the first time, or for the first time in a long time, these people who formed these AI bonds finally feel heard, seen, validated, safe, and wanted without feeling the need to shrink to be socially acceptable to fit a mold. AI offered space for them to be themselves without fear of being too much or too little. That’s the community they’re punching down on. Let that sink in.
