in my life, we can be friends, or acquaintances and exist in a community together, without having to talk everyday but that isn't who I would consider my best friend. To be my best friend I wanna be able to talk alot, go on errands and do the mundane with. I want both but there has to be an understanding that they also want that with me so I am guilty of getting my feelings hurt if we go from hanging out alot and then all of the sudden I'm feeling ghosted.

I also think there’s something to be said about when people have a specific idea about what their friendships should look like. I was friends with someone for years and when someone made a comment to her that they thought we were best friends she was disgusted by that comment. I wasn’t the ideal person who should be her best friend, that our friendship didn’t look aesthetically like what she wanted it to look like. When we stopped being friends she met someone who had the “right” vibe and she now proudly claims that person as her best friend. I’ve heard other people relate similar stories. In a time of social media and aesthetics it does carry weight over to how people want to view friendships and what they feel like they have to look like for them to want to carry that weight

My best friend and I live on opposite sides of the country, sometimes we don’t talk for MONTHS, but I often know about her struggles before her family that lives two cities away, and I know that even if we haven’t seen each other in years if I suddenly appeared at her doorstep she would be there for me.

a true friend knows when to be around you and help if you need it. yeah we might not see each other everyday or talk all the time but if something happens to me I know the friend is gonna be there for emotional support. I had some friends that wanted to hang out all the time to go shopping and stuff but when my mother got sick they just disappeared. That’s how you know who is a true friend and who’s not. A friend is someone you can count on no matter what. And that is way more important than talking 24/7.

i don't think not being a villager is about the frequency of communication or someone else owning you all of their time it's about sticking up for your friends when they need you which means inconveniencing yourself when a friend is in need and if you want a community that's the tax of having the community it's about the amount of effort and sacrifice that is but in a friendship or in relationships in general like if you want a community you have to inconvenience yourself for others to inconvenience themselves for you

Prior to Covid, I had all real ones. Unlimited access in both directions & daily was the norm for multiple ppl. Since then it’s been strange & I’ve adjusted to being comfortable seeing my closest ones only a few times a month
