I can’t understand how companies want to develop AI to replace workers, which are the same workers who buy their products/services… If I’m not getting paid, I am not going to buy the new iPhone or the new vehicle, etc… logically how does it make sense?

I love that Sam Altman was like you know. I think I'll do my my own study on universal basic income and then when it works, just like it always does, he's like well... damn it worked again. I don't like that at all. nevermind

Why would anyone do the work that can’t be done by AI? Are police going to be AI robots?

I don’t necessarily agree. This premise works best if the AI companies themselves become the most profitable, not if other corporations utilize AI to lay off workers and achieve record breaking profits. If AI model providers become more akin to utilities, the public’s stake in them will not offset the socioeconomic damage caused by them.

There was a similar resistance and irrational fear when computers were being developed in the 80s and 90s and yes a few jobs were displaced by computers, but as we now know it created many times more jobs than it displaced.

if we seized 50% of both Anthropic and OpenAI it'd still only be like $1k of stocks for each person in America

The projections are around $1k per year. That won’t bring anyone out of generational poverty though.

I bet at that point communism (or some point) would probably come into play to give back to the people. With only a few able to actually make money, the many would vote to take something. The capitalist way that we have grown up and lived for generations on would cease to exist and there would have to be a top-down change in political structure for the public to feel a benefit.
