@reactormag: I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that Aragorn's tax policy which they defend. #lordoftherings #aragorn #Hyperdriveoverfixation #reactormagazine #lotr
Let's not pretend we don't all understand that the only reason Tolkien doesn't describe it is because it's not relevant to the story at all. In fact, I cannot believe that Martin was being anything other than facetious in that interview, and maybe the interviewer missed the cue, I don't know. Martin is such a big fan of Tolkien that he named himself after him (RR), and for being such a deft hand at prose it comes across as surprisingly clumsy criticism if taken at face value. I interpret him as saying that he was inspired to explore those concepts precisely because Tolkien didn't, and thus he added something new to the genre, not just complained about what came before (which I don't believe he meant to do).

That makes he wonder how Thranduil ran his Woodland Realm. Since we know for a fact he had a standing army (or else he would not be able to defeat Sauron's army in the Battle under Trees).

Aragorn's tax policy question by GRRM always sounded silly to me. Aragorn: "my tax policies are that I am the king by God's literal decree, I was crowned by an angel, I helped kill another angel, and also I have magic healing hands. That's my tax policy"
