Music teacher here. Sounds like an admin issue. Things happen like every human. Sometimes two weeks in a row. A substitute should 100% be provided. Specialists are teachers, not babysitters. Let’s support all teachers.

As a music teacher, if a specialist team is taking off to avoid a certain day it’s likely because the students they see on that day are awful and admin have failed to support the teacher with behaviors throughout the year. Specialists have to handle every behavior in the building and when we are treated as babysitters by staff/admin instead of like real teaches, we dodge. We can’t be expected to handle every class as well as the classroom teacher does because our time is split between every kid in the building.

thats a school/district concern, please dont blame the art teacher. alllllll teachers should be able to take off whenever and for whatever reason. Does your state not mandate a certain set time for planning?

As a music teacher, there are so many things we deal with that classroom teachers don’t see, especially if the art teacher is going to multiple schools. The district should be sending a sub. Don’t get mad at the teacher for using her PTO..

Okay so as a music teacher with complex medical issues that involve me going for treatment every other month, I try hard not to miss the same day of the week every time, but my treatment days are not a choice. They tell me the day and I pick the time. I also drive 90 minutes both ways. You never know what someone else is going through. That being said, I do know that some teachers intentionally take certain days off and unfortunately, it’s in their right and technically you could also take one day a week off if you wanted to.

As an art teacher, I made l of my appointments Wednesdays to avoid my toughest group 😂 we always have coverage though. A perk to my job is only having the tougher groups twice a week, but the downside is I get them for sometimes all 7 years PK-5th 🤷♀️gotta protect your mental health somehow. We always have a sub though and if we don’t, our team covers/doubles up/splits classes. It literally never would fall on the classroom teachers bc it’s against contract to take that planning time from them without offering extra pay (rightfully so!)

I’m an art teacher and when I’m out I always request a sub, but often admin pulls that sub and puts them somewhere else in the building. At my school this means the other exploratory teachers have to split the kids. It sucks, but I have a life too and sometimes I’m sick, my kid is sick, or something else. Life happens. This is an admin issue, not an art teacher issue.

As a music teacher, I try not to miss days. But it’s my prerogative to take leave like everyone else. I missed the same day 3 weeks in a row recently. All for legitimate family reasons. But, unionized state so they must provide the coverage and everyone must receive their planning

why don't they get a sub? and if they don't have a sub, you should be able to tell them you can't cover today. that's in our contract as a planning period and we have to agree to take the coverage but they try to avoid that bc they have to pay us extra to cover

I’m gonna be so for real. This is an admin issue. As someone that is a specials teacher that’s a conversation with admin. Things happen people get sick. Sorry your kiddos didn’t have art but trust me that teacher is probably also stressed about it and how to make up for the lost time but life happens. Another point to add just like there’s a teacher shortage there is also a substitute teacher shortage and especially a qualified specials substitute teacher shortage.

Maybe they’re taking someone for a treatment and are doing the Tuesday appointment? Or maybe they have a personal reason they aren’t there. Either way, they’re a teacher not a prep giver and the school should be getting them a sub.

As a specialist I ALWAYS have to have a sub. I still have the responsibility of teaching a classroom of students which in turn provides prep.

Wow, it’s almost like…you also get sick days and personal days that you can 100% take off… it’s not the specialist’s fault that there seems to be a sub shortage or that there’s no plan in place for you to get an alternate prep time
