@itlandytech: Ever wondered how top-tier applications manage global traffic seamlessly? It all starts at the DNS layer. As shown in the excellent breakdown in image.png, choosing the right Cloud DNS Routing Policy is critical for balancing performance, cost, and availability. Here is a quick cheat sheet on the 6 essential routing types every tech professional should know: 1. Simple Routing How it works: Maps a domain directly to a single resource (e.g., one web server or load balancer). Best for: Small-scale applications or single-resource setups where 100% of traffic goes to one place. 2. Weighted Routing How it works: Distributes traffic across multiple resources based on predefined percentages (e.g., 70% to App A, 30% to App B). Best for: Safe canary deployments, blue-green testing, or gradual system upgrades. 3. Failover Routing How it works: Directs traffic to a designated Primary application. If health checks fail, it automatically diverts traffic to the Failover backup. Best for: Active-passive disaster recovery (DR) strategies. 4. Latency-Based Routing How it works: Routes users to the AWS/Cloud region that provides the lowest network latency (fastest response time) for their specific location. Best for: Global applications where user experience and speed are the top priorities. 5. Geolocation Routing How it works: Directs traffic based on the geographic location of the user (e.g., European users land on European servers), with a "Default" region fallback. Best for: Content localization, regional restrictions, and compliance (like GDPR). 6. Geoproximity Routing How it works: Routes traffic based on the physical distance between users and resources. Crucially, it allows you to shift traffic dynamically using a "Bias" value to expand or shrink a region's footprint. Best for: Sophisticated global traffic management and fine-grained resource control. 💡 Which DNS routing policy are you currently leveraging for your architecture?
