So just like most government entities we have a system set up completely unable to manage itself. No foresight, no oversight, self regulation, now costing the tax payer because again, its not set up correctly in the first place. So lets be short sighted and over charge for a service with no actual way to manage said service.

This is a totally broken civil system. The fees should have been paying for the enforcement system. The software system would have cost less than this single incident. The fines should be more than the landfill tax. This is all on the legislature and civil service.

This does not surprise me one bit. I used to deal with the Environment Agency a bit as part of my old job and they are an insanely inefficient organisation with basically no modern systems in place. They don’t produce invoices, despite the main part of their work being to charge companies fees and they send everything out in paper copy via post instead of via email. This lack of modern system was just waiting for an issue like this

My company used to offer waste management and disposal for the council/council houses, it was rate work and the cost of getting rid of waste was so high EVERY SINGLE JOB ended up costing us money, we had to completely drop this service from our business as a result. System is broken.

Governments and councils have repeatedly taxed landfill/recycling to the point where it’s no longer a viable business…expect this to become common practice

it’s crazy how awful the current system is??? like why do they also collect the landfill taxes? why would you ever design a system like this? and how can it take you so long to get a digital system working when you’re losing this much money due to a lack of it??

As someone who works in IT it still shocks me just how much paper is still used for such critical systems. Yeah its a good backup if the computer systems go down but with most systems having an availability rating of 99.999% now which equates to just under 6 minutes a year paper should be few and far between.
