Brad Pitt was never better than he was as Achilles. Troy gets a lot of hate for straying from Homer, but as a movie about ego, glory, and the cost of chasing immortality, it hits harder than people give it credit for. Achilles isn’t a hero here. He’s a man who knows he’s going to die young and has decided the only thing worth doing with that is being remembered forever. That’s it. That’s his whole arc. And Pitt plays it with this mix of arrogance and loneliness that makes him weirdly magnetic, even when he’s being awful. The Hector and Achilles fight still holds up over 20 years later. No music, no cutting away, just two men who both know one of them isn’t walking away from it.
