He was the son of King Amalric I and Agnes of Courtenay. As a child, Baldwin was diagnosed with leprosy, a serious disease that gradually affected his health. Despite his illness, he proved to be a brave and capable ruler. During his reign, he defended the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the forces of the Muslim leader Saladin. One of Baldwin’s greatest achievements was his victory at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, where his army defeated a much larger force led by Saladin. Although his health continued to decline, he remained dedicated to protecting his kingdom. Baldwin IV died in 1185 at the age of 24. He is remembered as a courageous king who ruled with determination despite suffering from a debilitating disease.
