Most managers enforce attendance policies when it's convenient — and quietly look the other way when they can't afford to lose that person right now. Your team sees every single bit of that. When enforcement is inconsistent your staff learns the real policy isn't what's written down. It's whatever you decide based on how much you need them that week. That's not a policy. That's a mood. I've done this myself. Let my best server slide on her third callout because I needed her for a Saturday private event. That one decision cost me months of credibility with the rest of my team.The fix isn't a new policy. It's this: → Same consequence. Every person. Every time. No exceptions based on how good they are or how badly you need them. The moment your team knows the policy is real and consistent — callouts go down. Not because they suddenly care more.
