“laziness” is often times always stemming from burnout or mental health issues, it’s always so interesting to me that in a fast paced society built a lot on quick dopamine fixes, people who aren’t as “successful” as someone else may be deemed lazy or not as hard working there is always a form of comparison, or people suffering from homelessness are deemed as “lazy people” when people don’t take consideration into lack of resources, or foundations that would allow someone to succeed in a society, or systemic inequalities and wealth disparities and also whether people can thrive within systems, so sad that people can be so quick to judge others based on whether or not how productive someone is, productivity should not define your worth!!!!

oh my gosh, i literally sourced the protestant ethic max weber for my thesis that critiqued modern lifes obsession with productivity 😭- if u have read oliver burkeman i highly recommend it cos it critiques our obsession with efficiency by contrasting it to the medieval peasants life which was dictated by ecological cycles instead

I wish I remember where I read this. some philosophy book anyways, which said (paraphrased) 'we have lost the language of the sublime and in its place is the language of productivity and efficiency' kinda sad really.

Check out Jacques Ranciere's "The Philosopher and His Poor". He traces the type of logic you're referring to, at least in part, back to Plato and Aristotle.

what happens to people who do like taking the easy way out. Who if given the option, will do nothing. Lets say society makes the transition to disconnecting value from productivity. I still do think most people will do work and function but what of those who dont wish to do anything. To reiterate what i understood of what you think is their lack of productivity is a product of the system that places so much value on it? Like because theres so much stress on productivity, laziness is a concept that is built up and heavily looked down upon. And people who cant handle that stress are called "lazy". And if so in a society where value and productivity are not as linked, "lazy" people will not appear as often or at all? Even if "laziness" is a product of this society and will gradually become less of an issue if we disconnect value and work, there will still be some always rooting for the easy way out, opting to do nothing rather than something. What will become of them? So ig my question is, do you believe the lack of will to do work is inherently tied to this system and will disappear once we cut the ties between value and productivity? If not, what happens to ppl with the lack of will to do work.

Maybe this narrative was specifically created to reinforce the existing imperial powers and naturalise all suffering caused by their colonial projects, or something

My natural intuition is that this would not be solely a product of protestant work ethic, though surely it is responsible for the majority of today’s global capitalist rat race. But you can look at other parallel moral structures that have risen in other cultures throughout history to see that this may ultimately be a product of any hierarchical system where there are those who seek to instill values of “work ethic” on those under them, so that they may profit disproportionately from their exploitation. Confucianism for example has similarly emphasized the duty to work and endure hardship. It has also introduced hardwork and meritocracy as a moral obligation similar to your point regarding protestantism. I think that we’re approaching the first time in human history where we can overthrow this universal yoke, or make it a million times worse. The need for bodies and labor will drop off precipitously with increased emphasis on automated jobs, especially if they transition from AI as LLMs into artificial general intelligences. Solely automating the trucking industry would remove 6% of the workforce permanently (this is coming soon). The motivation to continually emphasize productivity will be gone or deteriorate significantly. This can lead to two outcomes. The first is a centralization of the means of production to a select few billionaires and their families and an entrenchment of their descendants into a permanent upper class that no longer has a need for those they imposed these work ethic standards upon. There would be no un violent way to motivate them to give up this power, and by then with automated drones, they likely will have the means to maintain it. The other is a post scarcity society where we no longer have any need to work to live. We have to make sure it’s the second one either by revolution or reform before the entrenchment by democratizing the means of automated production, that’s the only way I think we as humanity can move past this endless cycle of work for someone else’s benefit. Otherwise its neofeudalism forever or they just kill us.
