• | Daemon and Brynden | • The Battle of the Redgrass Field was one of the most significant and decisive conflicts in the history of Westeros. Fought in 196 AC during the First Blackfyre Rebellion, the battle determined the fate of the Iron Throne and ended the rebellion of Daemon Blackfyre against his half-brother, King Daeron II Targaryen. Remembered for its heroism, tragedy, and political consequences, the battle became a defining moment for generations of nobles and commoners alike. The origins of the conflict lay in the long-standing tensions that followed the reign of King Aegon IV Targaryen, known as Aegon the Unworthy. Before his death, Aegon legitimized all of his acknowledged bastards, creating uncertainty regarding the royal succession. Among these bastards was Daemon Blackfyre, a renowned warrior who had inherited the Valyrian steel sword Blackfyre, the ancestral blade of House Targaryen. Many lords believed that Daemon possessed the qualities of a great king and should rule instead of the lawful heir, King Daeron II. As support for Daemon grew, the realm became divided. Powerful noble houses declared for either the crown or the rebels. Daemon’s supporters praised his martial skill, charisma, and noble bearing, while Daeron’s loyalists defended the legitimacy of his rule and the stability of the kingdom. The conflict escalated into open war, with battles and skirmishes occurring across much of Westeros. The rebellion reached its climax on the Redgrass Field, a vast plain where the armies of Daemon Blackfyre and King Daeron II finally met in a decisive engagement. The battle raged fiercely throughout the day. Daemon fought at the center of the rebel host, wielding Blackfyre and inspiring his followers through personal courage. His sons fought beside him, and many observers believed that victory was within reach. Rebel forces pushed hard against the royal army, and at several points it appeared that Daemon might succeed in seizing the throne. The turning point came through the actions of Brynden Rivers, better known as Bloodraven, another of Aegon IV’s legitimized bastards and one of the king’s most capable commanders. Positioned on a ridge with a company of elite archers known as the Raven’s Teeth, Bloodraven watched for an opportunity to strike. According to many accounts, Daemon paused during the battle to aid a wounded knight. In that moment, Bloodraven’s archers unleashed a deadly volley. Daemon Blackfyre and two of his eldest sons were struck down and killed. The death of Daemon shattered the morale of the rebel army. Although some commanders attempted to continue the fight, the loss of their leader proved devastating. The royal forces seized the advantage and gradually overwhelmed the remaining rebels. Daemon’s loyal half-brother, Aegor Rivers, known as Bittersteel, managed to recover the body of the fallen claimant and escape the battlefield with several survivors, preventing the complete destruction of the Blackfyre cause. The consequences of the battle were enormous. The victory secured the reign of King Daeron II and preserved the Targaryen dynasty. However, it did not fully end the Blackfyre threat. Daemon’s descendants fled across the Narrow Sea, where they continued to claim the Iron Throne. Over the following decades, a series of additional Blackfyre Rebellions erupted, prolonging the struggle between the Targaryens and their rivals. #targaryen #asoiaf #daemontargaryen #bloodraven #blackfire
