I'm reading bulgakov in polish right now and I cannot imagine the English translation being as expressive.

I don't speak Russian but from what I understand the original title is more akin to "Canine Heart" in this case canine (aka dog, or dog-like) is used as an adjective to describe the heart. So it's not about a heart that is a dog's it's a heart that's like that of a dog's?

agree, but my issue is penguin put placing their name twice on the cover when grove Atlantic also respected the author in that sense. either way, Canine Ruth wd hv been my translation.

The word parszywy (polish) comes from a name of an illness. So it would mean the sickest. Fun fact

well I think the english language is somewhat more "polite" with it.. because in romanian "inimă de câine" - heart of a dog.. just sounds bad. like you already know the story is about some rotten, misbehaved, mean being.

if anyone knows italian PLEASE read italian translation of russian book in general they are far superior 😭 idk why they all lock in on the russian translations but they do, or maybe it’s because we are really poetic?

It’s so hard to translate собачье to English, because English doesn’t have the ability to conjugate (cases? Not sure of correct term) words in the same way. Russian grammar and language really allows for poetry in a beautiful way
