Paint on your own, small tile, leave plumping and shower to a pro, drywall patching is easy, baseboards you can do

Don’t DIY any MEP’s. Do your research and make sure you subcontractor is licensed and follows whatever requirements your township building department requires. MEP work REQUIRES a permit AND inspection to close it out. I wouldn’t risk anything underground or behind walls, anything else you can take on.

Floors is doable. if you have never trimmed a house baseboards, crown, trim, shoe molding, I wouldnt attempt that. well worth paying someone if you don’t have that experience.

I don’t mess with : Electrical, plumbing, structural or any drywall issue that isn’t easily concealed / you wouldn’t be embarrassed about messing up and people seeing all the time. Drywall is super easy to install but super easy to screw up the mudding part and your flaws with be glaringly obvious.

Be careful knocking out walls if you aren’t sure it’s load bearing. Also pull permits for things like that otherwise you might run into issues when selling.

DIY everything- unless you have good contractors who won’t screw you. I just finished doing floors, Sheetrock repair, painting, trim, molding, built-ins, etc, and the only thing I hired for was recessed lights because they had a good price and I didn’t have the time. Honestly there is nothing you can’t learn in 2026 with AI and YouTube. Just watch LOTS before you start a project so you’re confident. Also- get the proper tools. You’re saving so much money on labor, it’s worth it to buy the right stuff so you don’t struggle. Good luck!

Sorry for all the ignorance here. You can DIY most things; however, leave the electrical and plumbing work for your contractors.

DIY is so fun I 100% recommend. Like who doesn’t want to learn these things to be able to do for yourself in the future! I just redid my entire half bath myself! Will be doing a full bath soon and I’m excited. Learned a lot!!

For shower, big tiles, and wood floors hire someone. If you are decent at plumbing, electrical, and painting it’s not too bad and you can save a ton.
