Fun fact: anything above SPF 50 is literally a marketing gimmick. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays. Any SPF between 50 and 100 is less than 1% more.

Wow, so many people are so confident in their wrong answers here. OP is absolutely correct. SPF 50 means that it's 50 times stronger protection from the sun than what your skin naturally provides. She explains it using hours to understand and she is right. That doesn't mean however, that the sunscreen actually lasts that long. It wears off and absorbs into the skin and you still need to re-apply it every two hours or every hour you're in water. Because it wears off.

be careful... higher spf doesn't mean better protection. anything over about spf 30, you get into the law of diminishing returns... at 50, you're only getting a smidge more protection than 30 and at 100 it's negligible. also make sure it's UVA and uvb rated

A lot of people also don’t know you’re supposed to use a whole shot glass sized amount of sunscreen per application. Probably easier to see with lotion over spray, but you really have to go to town with the stuff.
