@mr.theodoremaximus: He only does this with the phone and my retainer case reflection when we’re driving and the first time the other day at a baseball game with a phone. Its only when he’s been understimulated or has to sit still too long because most the time it doesn’t phase him but has anything worked for anyone for him to connect it’s not something he can catch? He’s almost a year so still a lot of puppy in him. #germanshepherd #dogs #chasinglight #doktok #dogadvice
Please look into laser pointer syndrome, I see it so often especially with shepherds!! It’s so sad

I was told by a dog trainer to not let them get too wrapped up in this kinda thing. It can turn on their OCD and stress them out to the point of exhaustion

Try ro avoid it as much as possible! Turn your phone over so the screen isnt reflecting. Dogs can develop an OCD like disorder and start looking for the light obsessively everywhere. Unfortunately GSDs are quite disposed to obsessive disorders like light chasing and tail chasing. Best thing you can do is prevent it and do not encourage it. They usually don't "get it" eventually, they tend to just get more and more obsessive about it. 😢

My dog growing up had this from a laser pointer and never grew out of it her whole 17 years- she would end up chewing through drywall if there was a reflection on it. She seemed to enjoy the hobby though 🤷♂️

teaching a "leave it" command is the closest we come to getting ours to stop. she still stares but doesn't really act on it

I think some distraction would be your best option, get his attention with some sort of command like shake or whatever and then reward?

maybe try a crate in the car? some dogs feel more secure riding in crates and maybe it would help him!
