I learned Spanish using the Michel Thomas method years ago on a 16hr bus ride. Was way more confident in conversation than after 3 months of Portuguese using DuoLingo.

This has been studied at length and his claim is dead wrong.

I took classes in Mexico. Duolingo was terrible at advancing my conversation skills. Sitting with a tutor daily and forcing yourself to speak your thoughts taught me quickly.

does it teach the language or does it teach translation? I'm finding my block is that I'm only translating things and not conceptualizing the language in my head on its own

I loved the Michel Thomas Method. Out of all the language learning methodologies I’ve tried, this stuck the best aside from studying. They make it feel like you’re in a fun classroom

Its easier as a kid only when theyre being taught by a parent. Because when the kid says yo necesites comida the parent can say "Yo necesitO comida". Kids learn much quicker when a parent is the one correcting their mistakes.

Thanks for that. I’m learning Korean right now the past 5 months with TTMIK course and have just added this to my resources. Just watched 25 minutes of the method on YouTube and it is very good. 🙏. 감사합니다

The comments about children are incorrect. Research shows that if you learn a 2nd language in childhood, you are much more likely to become fluent compared to learning it as an adult. It’s not impossible, but much harder as an adult. Young children learn language at a remarkable speed due to their stage of brain development. Their brains are primed for language learning.

No, you learn language easiest in early childhood. Brain development has a critical period for language acquisition. That’s how you get fluently bilingual children.

The method may be better, but in terms of raw brain ability to learn from basic exposure without using methodology or studying, I think the kid will usually outperform adults by far.
