I believe he should have been found guilty because had they not chased him over a water bottle at that, none of this would have happened. He could have just called the police if he thought he was stealing. With that being said, to answer your question, the gun matters because it shows reasonable doubt because in the eyes of the jurors, he could have pulled the gun. If he didn’t have the gun, he would have been found guilty. Not to mention the prosecution should have charged him with manslaughter instead of 1st degree murder. Or at least both. I believe the Jury would have found him guilty of manslaughter but in the eyes of the law, him having a gun, it wasn’t murder.
